Welcome to music!
Welcome to music! We sing folksongs our immigrant and native ancestors made up in response to their lives. We learn to read, write and hear music by using solfege. We play games that our anscestors made to go with the songs they sang. We learn to conduct and become fluent at beat and rhythm. We experience music by great composers. We love to play instruments and have fun.

Parents-ask your students if they sing easy little kids songs for choir. Ask them to show you position 1, position 2 and position 3 for singing.
5th Grade
Parents-ask your 5th grade student what a pentatonic scale is. Ask them what kind of a scale the song "Land of the Silver Birch" is built on. (hint to the student- It beings on l, and ends on l, -low la-) Ask them to teach you and your family the renaissance song 'Rose Rose Rose Red' and then sing it in a round with them in the car on vacations! Ask them how many different parts can be sung in this round.
4th Grade
Parents-please ask your 4th grade student to sing "Something Told the Wild Geese" for you. Ask them who the composer is.
3rd Grade
Parents-please ask your 3rd grade student to teach you 'Green Sally Up' and the hand patsch they made up for it. Ask them to sing the Chinese folksong, Jasmine Flower which they are learning.
2nd Grade
Parents-please ask your 2nd grade student to sing 'Mouse, Mousie' for you and to show you how they can write the notes on their hand staff in solfege- (hint-sol starts on the 4th line !) Here they are actually figuring out how to write the notes to a known song using a music staff that they always carry with them, their hand! Ask them the name of the newest solfa note they know.
1st Grade
Parents-please ask you 1st grade student to show or tell you the difference between beat and rhythm while they sing a first grade song.
Kindergarten
Parents-please ask your kindergarten student to sing 2 or 3 of their favorite songs from kindergarten. I teach songs that are relatively simple so that they can learn to match pitch and sing in tune. Also ask they to show with their voice the icebergs that Poppy Penguin likes to slide on. In this way the students learn to find the upper ranges of their voice. Ask them their favorite singing game.
